Adoption Films For Family Movie Nights

We can imagine there have been more movie nights scheduled than ever before. Did you know watching a movie with an adoption or foster-care storyline, or themes of identity and belonging, can not only entertain, but lead to a thoughtful conversation about the way your family was formed? It's important for parents to view these films or read reviews beforehand so that you can better prepare for feedback from your child or avoid potential triggers. Addison Cooper, LCSW does great reviews of movies to help you plan your family movie night or movies that can serve as an ice breaker to important topics. Here are two films we have selected from Addison's list:

Celebrating Barker’s 75th Year | Giving Back and Blazing a Path Forward

Celebrating Barker’s 75th Year | Giving Back and Blazing a Path Forward

When D.C. couple Richard and Ruth Barker adopted two children in 1937 and 1940, it wouldn’t have been possible to predict the consequences. Their experience led them to find an adoption agency of their own in 1945, which would become the Barker Adoption Foundation. At the core of their mission was a belief that children deserve permanent homes, and the earlier the better.

That desire to contribute to improvements in adoption practices remained a key driver at Barker. From the onset, the agency advocated for placing children as soon after birth as possible, providing care for birth mothers, involving birth fathers, sharing background information with adoptive parents, and more.

2020 Barker Goes Nats

WOW! What can we say about our World Series Champion NATS!

On Sunday, June 23, 2019, just before the first pitch, The Barker Adoption Foundation stepped out on to the field. In front of more than 33,000 people, Barker received the Washington Nationals’ “Spirit Award” in recognition of our unwavering commitment to supporting children and building families through adoption. Screech, the Nats mascot, cheered along with Board Chair, Gary Diamond, daughter Gerri Diamond, and PWNL families, Eva and Jenifer Wicks, Linda Hunter, Roy Mueller, and their son Matt, and staff member, Margeline Thomas and her son, Nathaniel, as they accepted the award on behalf of Barker and the thousands of families we have served since 1945.
